The CO2 Laser is commonly used in the larynx. A laser works as a very precise haemostatic scalpel. The heat generated by the laser seals off blood and lymph vessels making it very useful while operating on cancers or vascular lesions of the larynx. In selected cancer of the voice box cases, endoscopic laser surgery provides the same results as external major surgery.
As the laser generates heat which is absorbed by the Superficial lamina Propria layer of the vocal fold, many laryngologists prefer performing cold steel microflap surgery especially for benign glottic lesions.
Congenital webs are easily operated upon but the challenge is to prevent re-webbing. This video demonstrates laser excision of a congenital anterior glottic web with endoscopic silastic keel placement.
